Judges, independence and the Power of Common Law Essay

Judges, autonomy and the Power of Common Law - Essay Example flict since this can be utilized by authorities as a system for forcing their own point of view and making it a matter of legal strategy (Ferejohn, 1999). The regular origination of legal executive authorities being autonomous alludes to their capacity to make a move and make legal decisions without any potential repercussions, yet judges are, indeed, institutionally reliant on Congress and the president for jurisdictional decisions and completing of legal requests (Ferejohn, 1999). Basically, the reliance of legal accord on the external maneuvers of the more prominent group of administration executes an arrangement of balanced governance into the authoritative structure expected to deny maltreatment of intensity; in any case, the positive working of JI is fueled by the open confidence in the viability of the framework and its capacity to dispense equity as needs be. Financial Effect of JI The quality of JI depends on the popular assessments of the residents served by the authority a dministrative body. In this regard, JI alludes to the state’s capacity to ensure the rights and property of the individuals from others, including the administration (Feld and Voigt, 2003). In this regard, the pertinent relationships of de iure and accepted JI must be inspected to assess their effect on the monetary structure and by and large strength of the nation (Feld and Voigt, 2003). Basically, de iure speaks to the stated purpose of the law while true arrangements with how the appointed authority has influenced the law during his/her residency and the genuine aggregate encounters of the nation (Feld and Voigt, 2003). Where de iure has been resolved to have no effect on a country’s real money related usefulness, as decided through proportion of the GDP development, accepted JI emphatically impacts the budgetary parts of a country’s development (Feld and Voigt, 2003). Immediately, the autonomy showed... This paper centers around interconnection among judges and the ideas of the Judicial Independence and the intensity of Common Law. In the maintaining of open laws and rules, every country has sway, supported by the United Nations, which permits legal executive authorities to manage lawful issues in light of a legitimate concern for keeping up harmony and request. Such legal autonomy (JI) has course on various angles that influence the usefulness of a nation, for example, their financial structure, compromise, and designation of remedial estimates when laws have been broken. Albeit some legal courts are conditionally chosen to direct certain issues and others are autonomously chosen to serve for a predefined measure of time, the two instruments basically fill a similar need, which is to referee and pass restricting decisions to rebuff crime and resolve debates, which at times may make points of reference that convert into new enactment. With this impact, JI is planned to give passes judgment on the opportunity to settle on choices without weight or promptings from influenced gatherings to determine matters in sup port of themselves or be compelled to later safeguard the choices they make and requires a strong arrangement of governing rules to guarantee that authoritative authorities are not being unduly controlled. How far was Lloyd Georges fall from grace in 1922 the result of his own mistakes after 1918? Essay

A general political decision held in 1918 gave Lloyd George and the Conservative alliance a truly agreeable lion's share in parliament, yet it additionally left Lloyd George in an unsound position. The alliance comprised overwhelmingly of Conservatives, implying that Lloyd George’s hang on power was amazingly feeble. He was unable to do huge numbers of the things he would have gotten a kick out of the chance to do in an absolutely Liberal government, just on the grounds that he didn't have the help of the Conservatives. After the war, Lloyd George confronted some intense household issues. Initially was the issue of the German reparations and disciplines. There was a solid inclination in Britain that Germany was completely answerable for the war, and in this way ought to be rebuffed harshly. Lloyd George didn't buy in to this sentiment. He felt that Germany ought to be rebuffed, however not to the degree that it stopped to exist. He arrived at the resolution that if Germany was adequately demolished by war installments, it would leave a huge force vacuum in the focal point of Europe. Lloyd George was stressed that this hole would be filled by the Communist goals of the Bolsheviks. Alongside this, the post-war sadness that was devouring Britain brought about lost ubiquity for Lloyd George. The new markets Britain were depending after the war had not appeared, and a few of Britain’s old markets had discovered less expensive providers. This brought about an enormous scope shutting of numerous businesses. The disappointment of both France and Russia to take care of their war credits implied that Britain thusly couldn't take care of the advances obtained from America. This thus brought about a sensational increment in joblessness, going a long ways past the ‘intractable million’. In both of these circumstances, the Conservatives in the alliance were glad to kick back and let Lloyd George assume the fault for these residential issues. They started to see his decreasing fame and put forth no attempt to stop it. The Conservatives were more than mindful that they had an enormous enough measure of MP’s to have a general lion's share in parliament, so for the present they were substance to kick back and permit Lloyd George to attempt to work Britain out of it’s practical wreckage. After the war, the tremendous hole in Liberal and Conservative arrangement turned out to be overwhelmingly evident. The problem that is begging to be addressed of the proceeding with nationalization of the coal mineshafts caused numerous issues for Lloyd George. As a liberal, George was agreeable to open responsibility for mines. Realizing that it is difficult to persuade the Conservatives to continue with the nationalization, he requested a free commission into the issue. He told the worker's guilds that he would maintain whatever was chosen by the commission. Lloyd George expected he had turned away the issue by selecting a top adjudicator, Mr. Equity Sankey. Lloyd George felt that Sankey will undoubtedly need privatization of the mines. When Sankey found for proceeding with nationalization, Lloyd George was in a bargaining circumstance. He had just vowed to do whatever Mr. Sankey chose, however he would not like to disturb the Conservative lion's share. At long last, Lloyd George chose to sit idle. This incredibly furious the worker's guilds, and brought about an enduring doubt in him. The Chanak episode brought about a comparable circumstance for Lloyd George. Initially, it augmented the gorge between the two groups of the alliance further, with Lloyd George supporting the Greeks, and the Conservatives proceeding with their help of Turkey. All the more critically, the Conservatives were stressed with Lloyd George putting Britain at military hazard so not long after WWII. This is the most clear indication of Conservative disappointment with proceeding with the alliance. Lloyd George was additionally tormented by outside variables he had no power over. A case of this is the adjustment in administration of the Conservative party. Bonar Law was an amazingly persuasive figure inside his gathering. He was acceptable at convincing individuals to his perspective. His replacement Austen Chamberlain came up short on the artfulness of Bonar Law. He addressed his gathering about proceeding with the alliance just days after two alliance Conservative MPs had been crushed in by races. This implied at the time the Conservatives had next to no patient with the alliance. The developing embitterment with Lloyd George was just raised by his style of government. During the war, George framed a little war bureau that had the ability to make changes in any territory of the legislature. After the war, this proceeded. Instead of counseling his bureau on significant issues, he liked to counsel a little gathering of counselors. This clearly furious the Conservative bureau, as their impact over Lloyd George was falling. Another wellspring of discontent from the Conservatives toward Lloyd George was the alleged ‘honours scandal’. After his split from Asquith and the first Liberal gathering, Lloyd George’s dissidents required a protected wellspring of financing. To help this, he permitted praises to be offered to well off individuals for a lot of cash. This was unquestionably not the main case of this occurrence, however it was the principal case of it occurring on such a wide scale. To additionally add to the issue, a few not exactly flavorful business got themselves titles. The press seized these undertakings and made it normally known, a lot to the Conservatives alarm. Models like these show unmistakably that Lloyd George contributed essentially to his own defeat, however it’s likely that the Conservative decrease in help had a bigger impact in his go wrong. While Lloyd George was mainstream with people in general, he was an appointive resource, yet as his prevalence among the electorate diminished, so did his help from the Conservatives. Backbench Conservative MPs were especially angry with proceeding with the alliance as it implied they had less advancement open doors as various bureau places must be filled by Liberal MPs. Regardless of whether Lloyd George’s prominence among the electorate had stayed high, it is difficult to envision the Conservatives needing to proceed with the alliance past 1922. The 1918 political race had given the Conservatives the certainty they required in the wake of having quite a long while out of intensity. They understood they would have had a lion's share in Parliament without the Liberals in the alliance. While it is difficult to disregard Lloyd George’s deficiency as Prime Minster in harmony time, obviously Conservative thwarted expectation was the fundamental driver of his defeat. How to Protect Yourself From Phone Scams

How to Protect Yourself From Phone Scams How to Protect Yourself From Phone Scams How to Protect Yourself From Phone ScamsRing ring! Whats that unknown number calling you? Could it be… a scammer?!Phone scams are on the rise and it’s getting so bad, law enforcement agencies are issuing regular warnings. What’s the solution? Do we give up telephones entirely? Maybe we could set up a network of smoke signals and bike messengers who have all been sworn to protect the integrity of the messages they carry with their lives.Or you could just take this advice from the experts we spoke to.Take it easyScammers know that a nervous person isn’t a careful person. They’d be less likely to succeed if they called you up, told you they needed $1,000, and gave you a few days to think on it. That’s why scammers will try to weaponize urgency, and why you shouldn’t let it get to you.Nick Santora, CEO of cyber security firm Curricula (@Curricula), offered this advice: “One of the ways to protect yourself is to understand any inbound call can be suspicious, especially when asking for any personal information. The caller might use a sense of urgency to get you to give out your personal information. They will ask questions that they already ‘know’ the answer for you to confirm, but are really just making you give away your information. It is easy to be tricked or manipulated on a phone call.“Depending on the information you give to the scammer, you may be at risk for being applied for financial accounts or other services using your personal information. Your identity may also be at risk along with other personally identifiable information.“To protect against these risks, do not respond to any sense of urgency request, especially via an unsolicited phone call. If you are unsure, hang up and call the main public line of any service requesting information.”Build up your defensesThe only thing better than handling scammers smartly is never having to talk to scammers in the first place. That’s why Justin Lavelle, chief communications officer for beenverified.com (@BeenVerified), suggests you take the following steps as soon as you can:“Do register with the Do Not Call Registry. Although the Do Not Call Registry isn’t always consistent, it’s important to register with them to help eliminate a good portion of calls. If youve been on the Do Not Call Registry for a month or longer and still get calls, file a complaint with the FTC. It doesnt take long, and sometimes enough complaints can get policy changed. Report illegal robocalls to the Federal Trade Commission at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov or call 888-225-5322.“If you’re constantly being called by the same few numbers, consider blocking them. A variety of apps and services, many of them free, make it possible to cut down on unwanted calls on some landline and mobile phones (both Android and iOS). They work by blocking them, alerting you to a possible robocall, or forwarding suspicious calls to voicemail.“Set-up an ‘anonymous call rejection’ option. Call your phone provider to find out if this option is available for your landline. It lets you screen out calls from callers who have blocked their caller ID informationâ€"a tactic of telemarketers.“Sign-up for Nomorobo. Nomorobo uses a “simultaneous ring” service that detects and blocks robocalls on a blacklist of known offender numbers. Similar to the Do Not Call Registry, it’s not infallible but adds a layer of protection. It’s free for landlines and subscription based for mobile.“Check your caller ID. If you do not recognize the phone number on your caller ID, do not answer the phone. Let it go to voicemail or the answering machine. Most telemarketers will hang up and not leave a message. If it’s important, the caller will leave a message. If you answer and there’s a pause, that’s often an indication of a robocall, and you should simply hang up. Never follow the automated voice asking you to press 1. Do not push any numbers to reach a live operator, this signifies that the autodialer has reached a live number and this will probably lead to more robocalls.“Block incoming numbers on your cell phone. Most cell phone providers allow you to block an incoming number to your cell. After the call comes in, follow your provider’s instructions for blocking the number from calling you again.“Download a call-screening app to your cell phone. To help with robo telemarketing calls and robo spam texts to your cell phone, get a call-screening app like Truecaller or PrivacyStar that screens and blocks them.“Sign the Consumer Union Petition at EndRobocalls.org to pressure phone companies to start offering free call-blocking technology.“Check the WhitePages.com. Use the online telephone directory WhitePages.com to look up a phone number you’re unsure about. The site will let you know the scam potential of the phone number you’re checking on even if it doesn’t have the company name listed.“Give out your phone numbers sparingly. Resist the urge to p rovide a phone number unless it’s absolutely necessary. Just because you’re asked for it, doesn’t mean you’re required to provide it.”The above tips will help you build a moat around the castle that is your phone.Know your enemyIn addition to protecting your phone, you should familiarize yourself with some of the most common scams so you know exactly what to do when those crooks come a ringin’. Consumer advocate and scam expert Tom Antion (@TomAntion) gave us a rundown of some common hoaxes to watch out for so you’ll be prepared:Never say Yes“Never say ‘Yes’ to an unknown caller. Say, ‘Whos calling?’ or ‘What are you calling about?’ If you say ‘Yes’ to anything, they record you saying yes and then edit that audio into another audio asking if you agree to certain charges for BS services. You have to really train yourself to do this because they may ask for ‘Joe’ and you say, ‘You must have the wrong number. There isnt any Joe here.’ Then the sc ammer says, I’m calling (says your number). Is that your number?’ as soon as you say ‘Yes’ they have you and hang up.Can You Hear Me Now?Another one is a perky, sweet sounding girl supposedly fiddling with her headset. Can you hear me? if you say ‘Yes’, youve been had. In that one its not even a real girl. Its a robo call. One Ring ScamAnother scam is where the phone rings once. If you call back its a US mainland ‘looking’ number, but actually located in a foreign country and youll be charged enormous rates as they try to keep you on the phone for as long as possible running up your bill which they get a portion of similar to the 900 numbers of the past.SmishingShort for SMS Phishing. This is similar to phishing through email where the bad people are trying to get you to click on a link so they can download a virus or trojan horse to steal your identity. Dont click on anything from an unknown person texting you and don’t even click on something that appears to be fr om your bank, Amex, Visa, Paypal, etc. Call the entity directly to see if there is something wrong with your account.Lottery ScamsYou are told you hit the lottery or won a big prize and you just have to pay the taxes. You send the ‘tax’ money. There is no winnings. Guess what. If you didnt play a lottery or join a contest, you aint gonna win. ??Grandparents ScamYou get an urgent call from a young person on a static sounding line who says ‘Gramma. Im in big trouble. I got in an accident.’ The grandparent may say, ‘Jimmy, is that you?’ Now the scammers have the grandchild’s name. Jimmy says to Gramma, ‘Here’s the lawyer.’ An authoritative person gets on the phone telling the grandparent Jimmy is in pretty big trouble and is probably going to jail. Then the attorney needs immediate funds to represent Jimmy and keep him out of jail. The grandparent is instructed to go to Walmart, a drugstore, western union etc and send untraceable cash Which of course, disappears. Al ert everyone in your family about this scam especially any elderly people and tell them what to do and who to call to see if ‘Jimmy’ is ok or not.Utility ScamYou are called and told you have an outstanding utility bill and a representative will be there shortly to disconnect your power, gas, etc. unless you pay him cash when he gets there. Utilities dont operate like this. Keep your door locked and call 911 for police assistance and call the utility company to tell them too.SpoofingAny 3rd grader can use a spoof service and make the caller ID that shows up when your phone rings look like its the IRS, FBI, your local sheriff dept. etc. An example would be Spoofcard.com. The number may actually be the real number of the sheriff, FBI etc, but when you call them back to check, most likely unless youre on the most wanted list, they wont be looking for you.Microsoft ScamThis is where somehow youve gotten a virus and a Microsoft window pops up after locking up your computer. The pop-up has a phone number for you to call to get it fixed. Do not call the number. Look up a reputable computer repair and pay them to fix it and then be careful what you click on and what sites you visit in the future.“In addition to these scams, scammers are using intimidation techniques to scare people into paying. If you dont pay up, they are using Google Earth to look at your house and call you with an identifying feature as if they are outside waiting to get you Your house has the blue door and were going to bust it down if you dont pay.’”Robert Siciliano (@RobertSiciliano), CEO of IDTheftSecurity.com, offered up his own list of scams to watch out for, including the prize and grandparent scams:“Don’t assume you’ll never be targeted by phone scammers just because you don’t have a cell phone; they continue to feast on landline users, especially those over 50.‘This is the IRS…’Drill this into your head: The IRS never calls to collect back taxes. NEVER.A common ploy is to threaten that the listener will go to prison if they don’t pay up immediately. If you really do owe taxes, the IRS will contact you alrightâ€"but via snail mail, not a phone call, text or e-mail.Scam calls may also sound professional with no threats and may be a pre-recorded woman’s voice.Scammers can make the caller ID show ‘IRS.’Charities and FundraisersA call comes from the fraudster, claiming he represents a charity and wants your donation. The con artist may even say he’s with the local police department.Want to help mankind? Hang up on the caller and give to a reputable foundation or give out homemade sack lunches to the homeless.Go online and search the organization in question to verify they’re legit. If the call has an automated message, hang up immediately.A legitimate organization will not request your Social Security number or personal financial information.‘You’ve won a prize!’No, you haven’t. These are scams; hang up.Tech support never calls you …You must call them first. So if you get a call from ‘tech support’ asking for personal information, it’s a scam. Geek squads don’t just up and call people.A call about installing an update is a scam.Scammers can make the caller ID show ‘Microsoft.’‘Hi Grandma, it’s your favorite grandson!’If relatives call asking for money, hang up and call them to verify that said caller is really your relative.Avoiding Scam CallsMust you answer the phone every time it rings? It’s perfectly legal to ignore a ringing phone. If your phone has caller block, input numbers from suspected scammers. Next time they call, there’ll be barely one ring, then the caller will be blocked.”Whatever may comeEven with these tips, you’ll still need to be wary. Scammers can be very creative and are coming up with new traps all the time. Richard Lowe (@richardlowejr), the former director of computer operations for Trader Joe’s, told us about one creative scam he encountered:“Scammers can look through your social media and can thus find out a lot about you. Or, as in one instance that I experienced, they can hack an account and pretend to be someone you know.“In this instance, the night before, I had just met a lady and we used our phones to friend on Facebook. The next morning I received a Facebook message from her, claiming that she was in London and lost all her money and was in terrible straits. She gave me a beautiful sob story. Of course, I knew it was a scammer its not possible that she got from California to London overnight. But if that had not been the case, the scammer might have had more luck. She knew everything about the lady, because she had access to her account.”Lowe also affirmed that the IRS will never call you and that you shouldn’t be taken in by a phone call claiming urgency. He recommended hanging up and calling the alleged institution’s number from their website, to be certain you’ll be speaking to a real representative. And the ris ks are real. “You can lose a LOT of money if you fall for the scam and keep working through it,” Lowe warned, “And, in the case of scams aimed at businesses, you could cost your company thousands or even millions of dollars.”And you can be sure that if you’re already struggling with bad credit, getting ripped off is just going to make it even worse. It’s a scary world out there, but take all of this advice to heart and keep your wits about you, and you’ll outsmart every scammer who comes your way.Have scammers tried to  catch  you? Mccarthyism and the One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Vincent Sham Text amp; Context Prof. Grisafi Final Paper McCarthyism and the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, the characters of Nurse Ratched and Bromden Chief both serve as social commentary of the government of the 1950s. Nurse Ratched represents the control and dominance of the government in the 50s, and Bromden Chief represents the oppression of non-white people by the government and McCarthyism. McCarthyism was a tool that was used by the government at that time in order to scare and manipulate citizens. He/she acts as a guide to the students, while not pushing them too much. Such a perfect motivates them and boosts their morale. He/she tries to encourage the students and refrains from criticizing them. The perfect teacher prefers to give positive motivation to his/her students. His/her comments are always constructive in nature. He/she serves as our friend, guide, educator, confidante, and a blend of all the good qualities one can posses. Such a teacher shapes the entire life of the students. If everyone in this world gets an ideal teacher, he/she won’t have to look back in his/her life ever. Considering the fact that students spend a great part of their life at school, one may come to conclusion that schools contribute significantly into overall ‘quality’ of students’ lives. No wonder that personality of a teacher is of crucial importance; moreover, some teachers turn into extremely important people for the whole life due to the impact they make while teaching us. It is good if this impact is positive and brings motivation for students, however, it sometimes happens that teachers manage to spoil not only mood of a student but intrude into internal world, leaving unpleasant vestige there. That is why the statement that, â€Å"What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches†, expressed by Karl Menninger is really truthful. Question of teacher’s ethics has been on the agenda since teachers appeared and it is still important to talk about that. Teachers are the people, who should serve for students not only as examples of high education but of decent behavior as well. That is why each violation of teacher’s ethics may cause some really serious consequences and turn into crucial mistakes. For example, ignoring some student may lead to personal complexes because a young personality will feel depressed and underestimated. Of course, much depends on child’s family, surrounding, but as it was stated from the very beginning school is the place where children spend a great part of their time and that’s why they are growing as personalities at school. It is vital that they grew in a healthy atmosphere, surrounded by professional teachers that would be able to not only give knowledge but give lessons of ethics too. Educ. 207 BASIC EDUCATION SECTOR REFORM AGENDA ( BESRA ) The Department of Education is pursuing a package of policy reforms called the Basic Education Sector Reform Agenda (BESRA) to build upon the efforts of the School First Initiative (SFI) and to create a basic education sector that is capable of achieving the Education for All (EFA) objectives by 2015. STRIVE focuses on systems development, particularly at the regional level. The support systems which are being developed will address the need for effective continuous use of promising project initiatives mainstreamed in DepED as well as ensure quality improvement processes within the education system itself. STRIVE focuses on developing systems for BESRA regional implementation anchored to the national policy and frameworks. It is one of the strategic avenues to support the successful implementation of BESRA. The implementation of the BESRA was seen as a welcome move by many, both in the private and public sector. Several landmark initiatives by the DepEd have been based on the BESRA, such as the institutionalization of multilingual education, the Third Elementary Education Project (TEEP), and the Secondary Education Development and Improvement Project (SEDIP). However, years after its first implementation, many of the proposed reforms have not been fully implemented. As NicetoPoblador said in the column â€Å"Beyond reform, beyond transformation,† published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer last 25 January 2009, the primary hindrance to any true reform in the education sector was the resistance of â€Å"entrenched elements in the bureaucracy and by elements outside the system whose interests firmly lie on the status quo. † Poblador also paraphrases Cynthia Bautista, a sociologist at the University of the Philippines, saying that most of the reform proposals that have been put forward (including the BESRA, which was founded on the research of external parties) have been â€Å"externally generated. Because the proposal was â€Å"externally generated,† bureaucrats have the final say in the implementation of these reforms. Educ. 207 PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS OF DEPED Academics is not the be-all and end-all of education. At DepED, we recognize that pure classroom instruction cannot fully satisfy the growing need to provide pupils and students with opportunities for practical learning and proper channelling of potentials and interests. Because we believe in the importance of exposing and preparing young people to face the realities of life, we implement various programs and projects – all of which, hopefully, will help pupils and students become more well-rounded individuals and citizens of our country. Poetic Language an Example of the Topic Literature Essays by

Poetic Language The poem Incident (1925) is one Countee Cullens famous literary works which essentially narrates the experience of the speaker in Baltimore at a young age. Although Cullen is considered as Black, he did not want other people to refer to him as a Black poet but simply a poet for he believes that poetry is without race. Need essay sample on "Poetic Language" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed In Countee Cullens poem, the speaker narrates the treatment the speaker received from a Baltimorean of almost the same age which reflects the idea that during those times discrimination based on color is evident. Being called a Nigger in the poem, the speaker attempts to emphasize the idea that the social atmosphere in Baltimore during those days was not conducive to Blacks. In the first two lines of the poem, it can be noted that the speaker was traveling or, more precisely, riding in old Baltimore who appears to be happy that day. While riding, the speaker saw a Baltimorean kept on looking straight at the speaker. These first two lines give us the idea that there is a differing attitude of local Baltimoreans during those days towards Black people. At this point in the poem, it can be noted that a Black inpidual with a heart-filled, head-filled with glee is an ironic statement since Baltimore, Maryland has a history of Black slavery (Phillips 18). Hence, a Black inpidual roaming the locality of Baltimore with a cheerful countenance appears to strike the attention of those who have lived there and those who have an understanding of the historical context of the society. Hence, it is no surprise that the Baltimorean kept looking straight at the speaker. Being a state that held slaves of which it was made legal prior to 1850 and where Blacks had a significant presence in the locality, the history of Baltimore and the larger state of Maryland encapsulates a significant degree of importance on the social roles and identity of blacks during those times. In the poem, the speaker highlights the fact that, although Blacks took an important role in the development of Baltimore historically speaking, treatment towards them from local people was still tainted with a discriminatory nature. In the second stanza of the poem, the speaker narrates his experience that time when he was eight and very small. Eventually, after noticing the Baltimorean who kept looking, the speaker smiled knowing that the Baltimorean was no whit bigger. The speaker, then, tried to highlight the idea that, while Blacks attempted to portray a cheerful countenance or at least a normal perception of their society that for once held their race as slaves, their society in return gave them a negative response. This is made evident in the last two lines in the second stanza of the poem where the Baltimorean poked out his tongue and called the speaker Nigger even though the speaker merely smiled at him. The act of poking out the tongue is a gesture that is commonly taken to mean as an unkind gesture, one that depicts sarcasm, mockery, or an insult towards ones being. Moreover, for a child, the act of poking out the tongue towards somebody of almost the same age or size is an act that shows hatred, disgust, or ideas similar to that. What is more striking is that the Baltimorean did not only make the gesture of poking out his tongue. He also called the speaker Nigger which, during those early days, translates into a form of mockery or insult. It highlights the idea that, by calling a person Nigger, that person is treated to be as someone who belongs to the lower levels of the larger society. And while Maryland is historically known to have made slavery legal back in the 1800s (Phillips 18), Black people would have been treated as lesser than being human beings. In the poem where the speaker is called by the Baltimorean as Nigger, one can note the idea that there is social segregation or the idea that there is the separation or delineation of Blacks from the rest of those who lived in the area. By suggesting the idea of social segregation, the poem attempts emphasize the separate treatment for Blacks, delegating them under a lower status and social indifference. It gives us the sense that, while there are perceived demarcations in social hierarchy at least in the context of Baltimore, Maryland, there remains the larger truth that slavery poses a great deal of role in this demarcation. As a child of eight years, the psychological effects of the experience of being called a Nigger is emotionally or psychologically devastating which is the idea being presented in the last stanza (Piaget 81). In the third and final stanza, the speaker narrates that he was able to see and experience the whole of Baltimore from May until December. For some reason, the speaker went on to stay in Baltimore for almost seven months, lingering with various people in the place and experiencing many other things as a child of eight years. And during those seven months and of all the things that happened there, the speaker is only able to remember the day when he was given an indifferent treatment from the Baltimorean. This suggests the idea that the psychological impact of that experience lingered for all those months, and even perhaps until the speaker grew older. When an inpidual is still able to remember every detail of an event or experience that transpired long ago, it entails that the event or experience was unforgettable which was greatly absorbed into the memory of the person. It suggests the idea that being called a Nigger will not be forgotten. In the larger context of the history of the bigger American society, the events that transpired in Baltimore during the heydays of slavery manifests the thought that slavery at large will never be forgotten. Not only was it a major turning point in the lives of the Black people. Far more importantly, it was their defining moment. It showed them how the world viewed themas slaves, as less than human beings, as objects for the furtherance of the welfare of others. Countee Cullens poem Incident (1925) shares us this appalling experience. Generally, the poem implies the story of racism exemplified by the life of the young speaker and his eight-month long stay in Baltimore. The author responds to the more general view towards racism, or the treatment of the larger society towards Blacks, by emphasizing at the end of the poem the lasting impression of the racist attitude in the mind of the young boy. Moreover, the title of the poem, Incident, refers to the idea that the incident experienced by the speaker in Baltimore is the main theme of the poem and the corresponding consequences it brought to the central character in the poem. The very syntax of the poemthe simplicity of the few sentences of the poemreflects or implies the assumption that the author aims at clearly yet effectively sending across the underlying message of the poem. Beyond the simple use of words and short sentences, the author is able to relate the implications of the statements in the poem. For example, the line thats all that I remember clearly suggests the idea that the speaker in the poem cannot forget the specific incident apart from all the things that transpired while in Baltimore. The rhyming words in the poem, although written in order to complete or express the message, do not contain any other significant value for, when taken altogether with their corresponding rhyming word, they do not concretely suggest any meaningful connection. Lastly, the three stanzas that comprise the entirety of the poem can be analyzed in terms of their transition. It can be noted that the first stanza highlights the jovial tone of the speaker while the second stanza offers the transitory change in the tone towards the last stanza. While the second stanza serves as the turning point by narrating the incident or the experience of the speaker, the last stanza draws attention to the alteration in the mood of the speaker exemplified by the idea that the incident is all that the speaker is able to remember from the entirety of his experiences in Baltimore. How Im Discovering Myself essays

How I'm Discovering Myself essays I never knew what the true meaning of "discovering yourself" meant until I had taken this class. I have found out a lot of what my strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles were just by doing some very simple exercises. The assignment that I enjoyed doing while covering this topic was the "Discovery Wheel" In our textbook the meaning of the discovery wheel is an opportunity, to tell the truth about what kind of student you want to become, and it can also be used as a picture to how you see yourself "From Master Student To Master Employee" (Ellis 2011). Although the discovery wheel is not meant to be used as a negative judgment or a permanent picture of who I am it does make me aware of what kind of student I can be or could be for the duration of my education. When I did this exercise, I did it with an open mind. When I had finished the discovery wheel and looked at the outcome, I wasn't very shocked with some of the results however it did make me sit back and think about what I have done that has changed in my life? The answer was very simple for me maturity in general, seven years of being out of school, family, and work. I found that I am a lot more focused this time around. I've come to realize how many things that I once viewed as major things have changed. What I learned from the discovery wheel was what decisions I need to make to be successful in school so that I can complete my degree program. I believe if you have a goal set and you have the tools required to succeed you will be able to reach your goals and go beyond what you have set for yourself. Part of this class highlighted the point of setting and completing goals. I feel that I benefited from this exercise because I was able to fine tune some of my learning styles. By doing a self-evaluation of myself, I was able to see a picture of what will happen if I don't work on approving the areas that I am weak in. When I completed the exercise, my strong points we...

Realistic Fake Blood

Realistic Fake Blood If you want a realistic fake blood, youre going to have to do better than dyed water! Heres a recipe for a realistic fake blood that pools like the real deal and has a better blood color. Its sticky and will stain (like real blood), so use it on washable surfaces or those you dont mind getting all bloody. The blood is edible, so you can drink it if you like. 2 tablespoons white corn syrup6 drops red food coloring1 drop blue or green food coloring2 teaspoons cocoa powder If you use cocoa mix, like for hot chocolate, youll get a paler blood that may require some water to dissolve the sugar. Unsweetened cocoa produces a better blood for most purposes. Make It Disgusting You can sprinkle in some dried onion if you want the blood to look like it contains bits of scabs and fingernails. Other kitchen seasonings add interest, too, or consider adding potato peels. You can splatter the blood either by flicking it on a paintbrush or off of a fork.

School Activities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

School Activities - Essay Example Recommendations for strategic planning include conducting surveys among school teachers and officials regarding what changes they might like to be brought in the school environment and the curriculum; among students regarding any problems they might be having inside school premises like school bullying; and, among parents regarding what they think of school’s performance with respect to their children’s academic results. An activity needs to be arranged which should address such situations like a parent coming with a complaint or a community member raising a conflict. The administrator will need to arrange a meeting with the complaining party. When the parents come, they should first be made comfortable with tea and snack. Then, their complaint will be listened to and recorded. After that, relevant persons who can solve the issue will be called and they will meet the parents. A shared collaboration will be carried out in order to reach a solution that is equally accepta ble to all involved. If the conflict is so big that it cannot be solved through meeting, then a mediatory party will be arranged who will listen to the conflicting parties and will reach an unbiased solution. This activity relates to the school administrator in that all parents who have complaints about the school or their children’s performance always come to the administrator to get the issue resolved hence, it is necessary for him to arrange meetings with them so that the atmosphere remains calm and parents are satisfied. This all adds to the school’s repertoire and is beneficial for the whole of school community because when issue get resolved there and then, it results in overall satisfaction of everybody involved in the conflict. On the other hand, when issues remain unresolved, it results in tension between the parties which are the teachers and parents in this case, and this weighs heavily on children’s academic performance eventually. To sum up, this ac tivity involves arranging meetings with the parents and entertaining them in the best possible way. 3. Lunch supervision is very important if the aim is to achieve discipline among students. It is a common practice that students do not follow any rules and regulations during lunch time and since they are feeling hungry, so lunch lines become a mess as every child tries to get his turn first. Activity will include arranging a queue supervisor who will be a teacher or a class monitor. He will make the students form queues and will be present there for the whole of the lunch time to keep a check in students. He will make sure that no student breaks the queue and tries to get ahead of his turn. He will note down the names of students breaking the rule and will notify them to the school administrator. Students who follow the rule strictly will also be notified to the administrator and they will be appreciated in front of their classes. Doing so will motivate the students to keep a check on their own selves and with the passage of time, they will learn to stay in disciplined queues without the need for having a supervisor keeping an eye on them constantly. This activity relates to the school administrator in that he is responsible for the maintenance of discipline within school premises. He has to take steps to ensure that no student gets indulged in an activity that is a threat to school discipline. This activity will be beneficial to the overall school community because discipline will be achieved through control. Also, lunch time will be very peaceful with properly arranged lunch lines.

Ramayana: Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa Essays -- Valmiki, Rama, Lakshmana

One of the most striking relationships throughout the entire RÄ mÄ yaá ¹â€¡a is that between India's epic hero RÄ ma and his half-brother Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a. What is interesting about this affair is Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a's pure fidelity toward his brother and all his goals. While RÄ ma is the king on leave throughout most of the Hindu epic, Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a acts more or less as his royal servant and bodyguard of his most prized possession, that being RÄ ma's wife, SÄ «tÄ . Interestingly enough, Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a is very much an intelligent being himself, and one who revels in the longevity of his brother's interests and aims. This paper will deal with how these Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a creates himself as the most loyal of companions within the first book of the RÄ mÄ yaá ¹â€¡a. In the BÄ la KÄ Ã¡ ¹â€¡Ã¡ ¸ a, VÄ lmÄ «ki sets forth the ideal relationship between the brothers, which only grows stronger and allows the story to finish at the termination of t he Uttara KÄ Ã¡ ¹â€¡Ã¡ ¸ a. In order to understand Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a, we have to understand that he, like RÄ ma, is an avatar of Vishnu, and again, like RÄ ma, is sent forth into the forest with the sage ViÅ›vÄ mitra in order to conquer the demons that inhabit the land. Therefore, Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a is a royal and legitimate heir to the throne, although he is the youngest of all of the King of AyodhyÄ 's sons. Seemingly, his most striking characteristic is that of not only loyalty to RÄ ma, but to dhà ¡rma as well. Dhà ¡rma, aside from being the "right course of conduct in every dilemma," is a social contract for all human beings to follow. With the rise of the demon RÄ vaá ¹â€¡a and his dispensation from BrahmÄ of a boon of invincibility, RÄ ma and Laká ¹ £maá ¹â€¡a vow to help save the kingdom and the world from this evildoer and henceforth, to promote and uphold dhà ¡rma. American Literature Essay

Fenny Fern, pseudonym of Sara Willis Parton, was the first woman columnist, a popular novelist and author of children’s stories. She was the most highly paid newspaper writer of that period. She used to write on such topics, which a woman at that time would not dare to talk about in public. Fenny wrote on economic independence of women, prostitution, birth control, children’s rights etc. Fenny was deeply affected by the injustice women had to face both at home and workplace and hence she raised those issues in her newspaper columns. She even used to suggest the right ways and wrestled or equal right, equal pay for women too. ‘The working girls of New York’ is just one step towards what seemed to be her target. Here she dealt with the problems that working women faced at that time including the problems at workplace and also the inequality of wages. Rebecca Harding Davis was a journalist who raised social issues and is considered the pioneer of realistic fiction in American literature. She achieved fame from her novel, ‘Life in the Iron Mills’. Davis used to write for a change in social status of blacks, women, immigrants and the working class. She concentrated on the issues related to omen and portrayed the powerlessness of the working class in breaking the chains of industrial capitalism. According to Jean Pfaelzer, ‘Life in the Iron Mills’ must be considered a central text in the origins of American realism, American proletarian literature, and American feminism. Both Fenny and Davis fought for social injustice with the help of their writing skills. Their medium of war was print and instrument was pen with which they used to fight for the prevailing social injustice. They raised issues of the downtrodden and the working class that had to suffer various problems at that time.

Scientific Method - 1034 Words

The Scientific Method Utilizing The Scientific Method SCI110, Introduction to Science May 1, 2015 The Scientific method is a process that scientists use to solve a problem. It generally involves four distinct steps that constitute the â€Å"Scientific Method†. This paper describes the steps of the scientific method, and its application in a real-world scenario we experienced. Step 1: Formulating a Problem Formulating a problem can range from simple to difficult solutions to a problem. In order to solve a problem, you must first know what the problem is. To begin with we can determine what the problem is not, just based on facts known by yourself, coworkers, friends or family. This pumps the water out of the pit and into a pipe which ejects the drainage water out of the house and (hopefully) far away from the house.† With the sump pump installed, we waited for severe rainstorms to hit before observing the results. After one light storm, there was no flooding. But after a second, more severe storm, the floor continued to take on water, which led us to the Conclusion that either the flooding was not due to the rising water table, or the sump pump was ineffective at stopping the rising water table. At that point we decided to observe the flow of water outside during the next big storm. When it finally hit, we went outside and observed a significant amount of water flowing straight down the wall just outside the walkway, from the top of the walkway under the deck. Once again, the walkway floor took on water. We revised our Hypothesis to state that the basement walkway was flooding due to water flowing directly down the exterior wall, underground, where it entered gaps in the wall to the walkway. Our solution to test the Hypothesis was to install a gutter under the deck, under the flashing which separated the walkway roof to the walkway exterior wall. This would catch rain water and funnel it away from the wall, therefore preventing water from flowing directly down the wall where it could enter the walkwayShow MoreRelatedThe Scientific Method Of Scientific Methods1015 Words   |  5 Pages Research Methods Paper The Scientific method is a procedure that consists of systematic observation measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of the hypothesis.
